    Dear Members,

As a constituent in your electorate, I want to share with you this important message and ask you to support proper and fair funding for public schools.

With COVID disruptions and government underfunding of public schools, it’s the future of our children that is at risk.

We know that more individual attention and learning support can change a child’s life. That’s why it is so important that every school has the resources needed to ensure every child can succeed. Those opportunities must be universal, not predetermined by wealth, location or family background or constrained by inadequate resources.

The Federal Government must properly resource public schools and ensure every school is funded to 100% of the minimum Schooling Resource Standard. The additional investment could mean smaller class sizes, more literacy and numeracy support, additional teachers and support staff, modern and COVID-appropriate facilities and, most importantly, greater individual attention for students.

Australia’s future depends on the quality of education our children receive: a nation of people with the skills, knowledge and expertise to ensure our future prosperity.

    Will you back public schools?

    Yours sincerely,

Every school should be provided the resources it needs to ensure every child gets the best education, regardless of their background or circumstances.

And public schools are making a significant difference in the lives of Australian children, helping to level the playing field, overcome disadvantage and achieve excellence for all. But proper and fair funding would make the world of difference - new high quality classrooms and improved school facilities and equipment, more teachers and support staff, smaller classes and additional learning programmes that give every child the opportunity for a bright future.

We call on all federal politicians to commit, as an urgent priority, to:

    • Fund public schools to a minimum of 100% of the Schooling Resource Standard(SRS) which is recognised as the minimum funding requirement to give every child, regardless of their background, the greatest opportunity to achieve their full potential; including fully funded loadings for students with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students from low-SES backgrounds, rural and remote students, and students requiring English language support
    • Remove the legislated 20% cap on the Commonwealth share of the SRS for public schools
    • Remove the 4% capital depreciation tax in school funding bilateral agreements between the Commonwealth and States/Territories
    • Establish a capital fund for public schools to help meet rising enrolment growth and infrastructure needs
